Internet Shortcuts

Make your internet work or play go quicker and easier with a few tips. Some of the keyboard tips down below can also save the day if your mouse breaks. These tips are for Internet Explorer but most will work in the other browswers also.

When you see a little red x instead of a picture, hit the back button, then go forward again to the page. This will often make the pictures appear.

Click on the right side of the back button to see a list of sites you have been to. This way you can go backwards up to ten pages at a time or directly to a specific page.

OR, click on the down arrow at the right end of the Address bar to see many of the sites you have been to lately.

OR, click on the history button at the top of your browser to see every site you have been to in the last ____ days it is set to keep.

To open more than one window, click on File, New, then Window.

Use two windows, one above the other: open two windows. Click on the double square at the top right of the window. Put your mouse cursor on the bottom edge of one window and "drag" it toward the top. Click on the second window, follow the same procedure except put the cursor at the top of the window and "drag" it toward the bottom. Click on the first window again and you will see both at once.

To find a certain word on a page quickly, click on Edit, Find (on This Page) then fill in the blank.

Stop pop-up ads by clicking on Tools, Pop-up Blocker, then Turn on Pop-up Blocker. You can turn this back on at any time. Or, you can okay pop-ups from any site you want by instead clicking on Pop-up Blocker Settings and adding the URL of a site that you trust.

To see what version of software you are using, click on Help then About ____ (the name of the software).

If you don't see a HOME button on a site, try clicking on the title. Most titles are linked back to the home page.

Mouse Tips

To open a link in a new window so you won't lose the page you are on: click on the right side of the mouse, then click on Open Link In New Window.

To print only a picture on a page: click on a picture, click the right side of the mouse, then click on print picture.

To change the print size on a page you are viewing: hold down the Ctrl button on your keyboard and turn the wheel of the mouse forward to increase the font; turn the wheel toward you to decrease the font.

Double click with the mouse on a word, and the whole word will be highlighted for quick copying.

You can tell that words or a picture are links by watching your mouse cursor - it will go from an arrow to a hand pointing a finger. Links are usually blue and underlined, but many are a different color or not underlined at all.

Click the URL in the Address section of the top of the browser once to highlight the entire URL at once. Then you can copy it by clicking on the right side of your mouse, go to the Notepad, MS Works, etc., click on the right side of your mouse again, then click on paste. (It is best to open Notepad, MS Works, etc., first.)

If you find an interesting website, click on a blank section of the page or on its text with the right side of your mouse, then click on Similar Pages.

To see if a page is "popular," click on a blank section of the page or on its text with the right side of your mouse, then click on Backward Links to see if anyone is linking to that page. (This will usally show only a fraction of the links. Yahoo did not show any backward links for this site, but doing a search for this domain brought up 1,750 pages that either link to or contain the domain name.)
