Get the last bit of shortening from the can by filling it with boiling water. After it cools, the shortening will rise to the top and harden.

Get the last of the chocolate syrup, pancake syrup, or corn syrup out of the bottle by putting it in the microwave oven for 10 seconds or so. Heat it with the top open to let it vent.

To ripen fruit quickly, put it into a bag along with one ripe piece of fruit. The ripe fruit gives off a little "ripening gas" called ethylene.

It is tough for vegetarians to get enough protein. Beans are an "incomplete" protein since they don't provide one of the essential amino acids needed from food for building protein in the body. Grains, which lack a different essential amino acid, provide the amino acid missing from beans and vice versa. Together, make complete protein. Examples of complementary protein include beans and rice, a bean burrito (beans in a tortilla), and beans and corn.

The health benefits of garlic are lessened by roasting, boiling, or microwaving. Whole garlic has little or no odor until it is chopped or crushed. The chopping or crushing also bring out more health benefits than whole garlic. Garlic that is chopped or crushed will still offer plenty of health benefits if it is allowed to set for at least 10 minutes before heating.

Carrots and broccoli must be eaten with at least 3 grams of fat, or the body will not be able to absorb the beta-carotene they contain. Cooking and processing will also lessen the amount of beta-carotene available in carrots or broccoli -- raw carrots contain much more than canned carrots. The beta-carotene from food offers much higher benefits than that from supplements.
