Odor Control and Removal

Eliminate unpleasant odors with white vinegar. Pour some vinegar into saucers and set them around the kitchen or other rooms that need help.

To eliminate kitchen odors, boil a mixture of 1 cup of water and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar.

Get rid of the smell of burnt food with lemon water (lemon juice or slices). Boil then simmer.

Remove refrigerator odors with vanilla. Put a soaked cotton ball in a saucer and place it into the refrigerator.

Take care of the musty odor in old books with used dryer sheets. Place a sheet in the front cover and one in the back cover, or use half sheets for smaller books.

Musty odors in drawers, trunks or suitcases can be removed with white bread and white vinegar. Place a slice of bread into a bowl and cover the bread with vinegar. Put the bowl inside the article, close it up, and let set for 24 hours. Use a deep enough bowl in a drawer so no vinegar will spill when it is opened and closed. These tips can be used when performing an office cleaning, as well.

Remove odors from drawers, trunks or suitcases with newspaper. Wad up enough newspaper to fill the article and close it up. This may take days or weeks, and replacing the newspaper every few days will speed things up.

Unpleasant odors can be removed with baking soda. Place it where necessary in an open can or bowl.

Pine or cedar wood shavings can be added to drawers, trunks or suitcases to remove bad odors and replace them with the wood scent. The shavings also absorb moisture, which is a big cause of odors. Replace as necessary.

Closets can be kept mositure and odor free with sidewalk chalk. The chalk can be kept in a smelly pair of shoes, on the floor, on the shelf, or in a hanging net bag.

Cigarette smoke can be removed from upholstered furniture and carpeting with baking soda. Sprinkle it on, let it set for several hours, then vacuum.

Give a fresh smell to a small item by placing it into a plastic bag for several days with a dryer sheet.

Scent a room with fragrance rings or perfume rings. The rings fit over a lightbulb and are usually made of clay or metal. The heat of the light bulb will send your favorite perfume or essential oil through the room.

Add your favorite scent to a room by filling cotton balls and placing them in closets, drawers (ones that are opened often), on the mantel, etc.

Freshen your whole house with the smell of cinnamon by placing it into a hot oven, loosely wrapped in foil. Once the aroma is strong, turn off the oven and open the door.

Freshen a refrigerator with unused coffee grounds.

The refrigerator can also be deodorized with an open box of baking soda.

Eliminate and prevent odors in the humidifier by washing it out with borax and water. Rinse before humidifying again.

Odors in a picnic cooler or ice chest can be removed by washing thoroughly with hot vinegar then rubbed inside with vanilla. Keep the lid ajar until it is thoroughly dry, and be sure the drain hole is left open before storing.

Keep your car smelling nice and remove cigarette odors, fill the ashtray halfway with baking soda. This will also put cigarettes out immediately without residual smoke. Replace the baking soda every time you empty the ashtray.

Cigarette odors can also get into car upholstery and carpets. Sprinkle generously with baking soda, let set overnight, then vacuum.

For painting without paint odor, add a few drops of vanilla extract to each can of paint. Use lemon extract for white paint.

If you forgot to add the extract, you can add it after painting some, and it will still remove the odor.

If you do not have any vanilla extract or lemon extract when painting, put out a few bowls of water to remove the paint odor.

House windows should be opened daily to let out odors and let in fresh air.

Deodorize your garbage disposal with borax. Put several tablespoons into the drain, let it set 15 to 30 minutes, then flush it down with boiling water while the disposal is running.

Deodorize your garbage can by washing it out with borax and water, letting it dry, then adding more borax.

To freshen a clean toilet bowl, add 1/4 cup of borax to the water in the bowl, swish it around all areas, then let set for an hour (or overnight).

Urine and milk spills can be removed from a mattress with borax. Sprinkle on the borax, let dry, then vacuum.

Keep odors out of the breadbox by wiping it out with vinegar.

After using the toilet, light a match and let it burn for a few seconds. (Put the used match safely in an ashtray.) Bathroom odor will be gone before you open the door. It beats any air freshener and is much cheaper.

Stinky shoes can be refreshed with tea leaves. Use socks or pantyhose to hold the tea leaves, insert them into the shoes, and let set for a few days.

The smell of burnt popcorn can be removed from the microwave oven with lemon juice. Put a cup of half water and half lemon juice into the microwave and heat to boiling. Let set for 30 minutes.

Deodorize the microwave oven by inserting a bowl of water containing lemon slices or lemon juice. Bring this to a boil and let set for 15 minutes.

A microwave oven can be deodorized by inserting a bowl of water with vanilla extract added. Heat on high for 30 seconds or until you can really smell the vanilla. Let set overnight, then wipe out interior in morning.
